A project of a medium-size destroyer, officially named "fleet destroyer" (type 1940). The ships of this series were built in the Netherlands based on the Dutch designs and components. From other German members of the type the project differed favorably by the overall balance of the characteristics.

Torpedo reload time of T-61 is ridiculously short, only 68 seconds. The same torpedo armament on Ernst Gaede requires 90 seconds to reload.
