Lead ship of one of the series of large destroyers (contre-torpilleurs) – characteristic for the French Navy ship type, which main purpose was to fight destroyers. It was large in size and fast. It could match modern destroyers' torpedo armament power, and was significantly superior to them when it came to the artillery, carrying five 139-mm guns.
